DirecTv widescreen movies

Hi folks. I have an ANALOG (not hi-def) DVR from DirecTV, and for some reason they have stopped broadcasting widescreeen and Dolby digital PPV movies. What's up with that? If I convert to Hi-def (which involves buying a new TV) do I get back the widescreeen and DD movies?
