standard versus eco mode

When viewing movies on a projector, is it okay to use eco mode? Does this degradge picture quality? Also what are your experiences with lamp life. Does eco mode really extend the life to 3000 hours or does proper usage (ie. do not turn on the projector immediately after a shutdown) extend the life better?
