4k is a resolution that has previously been used for Digital Intermediary
in scaning films for effects and color corection but now the possibility for
content filmed in 4k from a camera is around the corner. Check red.com
to see the camera that people are craping themselves over.
The pixels size is about 4000x2000 so about 4 times the resolution of
1080 based hd. Its going to be the next big thing in film making the
post production workflow has to be woked out and the huge amounts
of data have to be dealt with. What effects that this will have in your
living room is probably not going to be huge, the industry has had
a difficult enough time getting 1080 distributed.
