To find out, go to Best Buy and try to buy one without paying a subscription. I don't think you can.
The alternative is to purchase either a Pioneer or Panasonic DVR that doesn't require a subscription. I don't have cable or satellite TV, so I bought a Pionneer unit to replace my aging VCR, and it works like a charm.
