I am using a Sony DVP-C600D for the same purpose. I wanted a DVD player, but also wanted the functionality of a CD changer w/o buying the two components separately. I decided on the Sony DVP-C600D primarily because it was the only changer available that also reads CDRs, which I like to use to play mixes when entertaining. I think it has a separate laser for reading CDs (not sure here, though.) But beware, the replacement model currently on the market, DVP-C650D does not play CDRs. The DVP-C600D used to retail for $900, but prices dropped when it was discontinued last year and I got mine as a brand new floor model that hadn't been out of the box for more than a week for $400.As for musicality, I would say it sounds ok. I consider my system nice mid-fi, and am new to the audiophile life, so I don't have a lot to compare to. But I am looking to add a dedicated CD player to my system as my next purchase, because music is very important to me. The DVD changer was the low hanging fruit, so to speak, when setting up my system last year. I'm guessing that I can do better in the sound department. That's not to say that the Sony sounds bad, but it does a lot of things--change disks, read different varieties, onboard DD decoding (which I don't use)--so I expect a dedicated CD player to sound better. The Sony is actually a pretty nice DVD player, though, if you can find one. My main gripe is that the remote is not well suited to porting functions over to a universal remote (there's a jog dial and separate buttons for each disk, rather than a "skip disk" button.)
