An Editor's Choice award need not reflect the views of the public at large or the industry's view on which format is most likely to succeed. It just shows that the editor thought it was a very good machine. It may be but that says nothing about the format war and who's going to win.
Toshiba should be pleased to see that someone appreciates their engineering skills. I wouldn't read too much else into it because the award could well be more about the player than the format.
