At that price point, the $1299 Panasonic 720p PT AX200U or the $1299 Epson 720p Cinema 720.
I have the very similar previous Panasonic 100 model in my home theater.
Check http://www.projectorcentral.com for reviews of both. Both are very bright and can be effectively used when there is some ambient light. Both have flexible 2x zoom lenses that give you a lot of placement flexibility. Both do a great job with standard definition DVDs, but will show Blue Ray and HD in the future.
