gave a negative review of a product, then that manufacturer would boycott them, refusing to run ads in the magazine or send them product to review.As readers caught onto the game, they would stop cancel their subscription and/or stop buying the magazine. Another potential revenue source dries up.
No ads, no magazines purchased (either by subscription or bought at newsstand), then no revenue stream, no magazine. Simple as that.
This same problem is found in the guitar magazines, and probably other areas of commerce as well. This is why Consumer Reports exists. Unfortunately, they don't review audiophile or videophile type gear. And I wonder about some of their statements, though to a lesser extent.
