CRT's use magnetic deflection to steer the electron beam, scanning the phosphor coated tube. A stray magnetic field from non-shielded loudspeakers can interfere with the TV’s magnetic field. The stronger the loudspeakers magnet, the farther away it can cause problems (my Selenium WPU1505’s large magnet system caused havoc with my Sony Wega starting about 9 feet away!
Flat panel TV’s, either LCD or plasma, do not use a magnetic field (the pixels are not ‘scanned’, but turned on and off electronically). With a flat panel, shielded loudspeakers are not necessary.
