I’ve been a audiophile for a long time. Like most audiophiles I value accuracy in music reproduction. I want the sound coming out of my system to be as accurate as possible in its reproduction of the source. I would not think of adding an equalizer to punch up the highs or bass, even though some extra sizzle on the high end might be pleasing or some boost in the bass might provide a more impressive bass response with greater punch or impact.
However, with two exceptions, I have not “imported†my concern with accuracy to my video reproduction. I do want the colors “as colors†to be rendered as accurately as possible and I do want to see all the detail in the source as well. But that’s it.
I select the settings on the picture menu that make for the most pleasing and impressive picture. I suspect the lawn at the Masters isn’t quite as brilliant green as reproduced on my HD TV. It may be that the level of contrast I see on DVDs and Blu rays is greater than on the source. In others words, with the video equivalent of tone controls , I am prepared to make the picture more pleasing than the source. So while I want my audio to be accurate I want my video to impressive.
Am I alone?
