I have no idea what those megabuck DVD players look like, but my old Toshiba HD A20 looks magnificent to me when playing ordinary DVDs! Let the player scale them to 1080i and connect via HDMI. The last, top-of-the-line player was the HD-A35, currently available used for peanuts.
As a bonus, there are still some HD DVD titles which aren't available as Blu-Ray, and they too sell for peanuts.
