Ironically, I just installed the ribbon cable and tried it out tonight (this player is s-w-e-e-t)! Opening the player and hardware installation takes about ten minutes; removing the manufacturer's cable and installing the modified ribbon cable doesn't require much technical experience; just follow the simple instructions and pictures that should come with the mod kit (if not included, I'm pretty sure that they're downloadable on-line). After it's installed replace the cover and screws and it's region & zone free as described.
I was just about to pull the trigger and buy a Momitsu, but then rumors started circulating about the first Oppo BDP-83 hardware mods; that convinced me to wait a little while longer and do a bit more research. Now the Oppo mods and mod-kits are readily available on-line through at least a couple of dependable eBay vendors.
The cheapest way to go would be to buy the player from Oppo and then the mod kit for under $100 (see link below), but several vendors will sell you completely hardware modded players if you're uncomfortable with opening the player up and installing the cable yourself. Note: This would be my recommendation as you would then have the original cable bagged and ready to reinstall it if you ever needed to send the player back to Oppo for warranty work. Of course, Oppo players are extremely dependable, so warranty work would probably never be required within the alloted period.
BTW, be sure that the listed player states "100% hardware modified" or something to that effect. Otherwise you might end up buying a firmware modified player instead (they are usually $50 or so cheaper, but the same firmware can be downloaded for free). It's also worth noting that the downside to firmware mods are that if you download any of the Oppo firmware updates it will probably overwrite the firmware mod eliminating the region/zone free access.
I'm still unhappy with Oppo for surrendering to the BD Association rather than working around the cartel like Momitsu did, but there's no getting around the versatility & quality of Oppo players, dependable customer service and regular updates for performance enhancement.
The included Oppo BD test disc proves how good this player is negotiating difficult patterns, and it's almost as fast loading as a standard DVD player! As for comparisons with the SONY PS3, well, I don't have one of those, but I doubt that it's any faster or better at resolving BD images.
Cheers,
AuPh
