all that David says is true, but there is much more to multiple subs (or even a single sub) successful implementation.
among them are the types of filtering used such as HPF LPF or both. the quality of the filters, the filter type and order (slope), whether you have the ability to adjust phase (basically delay) and damping (gain at the corner frequency.) Are you summing the L/R or running discreet L and R. If summing how and where, at the subs or at the source? As a designer of hi-end audio equipment, the most difficult task for me has been to seamlessly integrate a sub into a system; no matter if stereo or multi-channel. A successful sub integration should enhance the bass where needed without coloring or altering the main speaker(s)output and should not be heard as a seperate unit but as an extension of the original soundstage. there is tons of info out in cyberspace, read it all and experiment. eventually you'll hit it and the result should be worth the time spent.
