Video Switching - AVR power needed?

I'm upgrading my 2-channel into HT.

Have a HDMI switching AVR - would like to run just one cable to TV from AVR (Sat box with DVI and HDMI BD DVD). I plan to use composite to view OSD then disconnect after setup.

I really don't want to power up the AVR just to watch TV (which is why I was planning to run component to the TV and HDMI for the AVR). My TV has only one HDMI.

So bascially - does the AVR need to be powered to actually "switch" the sources?

Thanks
