After I connected antennas to my sets, I called DirecTV to ask that they stop charging me for local channels. I was told that the local channels were part of the package. Then I went on their website and saw that my bundle is available without local channels, at about $3.00 per month less. I called again to argue this point further and was told that if you have a package, and local channels are available in your area that it is mandatory to include them as part of a the package. This sounded dishonest. What is worse, a lack of candor pervaded the back and forth conversations on this topic.
I plan to complain to whatever authorities regulate them but in the end it is probably time to switch providers. The quality of the broadcast local channels through the antenna over the air is superior to what they are piping in through the dish.
