free converter for wmv to format for standard DVD player?

TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Home Theater systems and more.

I mistakenly put hours into editing some AVI home video via Windows Movie Maker. Unfortunately, the result is in .WMV format and my home DVD to TV players cannot read that format. I tried converting that with a free program to MPEG format, but the DVD player wouldn't read that either!

Can anyone recommend a free downloadable converter for this purpose? I really don't want to have to re-edit the whole damn thing again!
