Good alternatives to Oppo DV-981HD ?

I need to buy a region free DVD player with good upconversion to 1080p, new or used. The Oppo DV-981 is going for about $130-150 used and I'd like to pay less without sacrificing much quality. For those familiar with the Oppo, can you recommend a cheaper alternative that doesn't give much up on video quality? I'm not ready to buy Blu-ray quite yet so this is a stopgap solution to enable kids to watch region 4 DVDs. Thanks!
