Why substitute CRT with "direct view"? After all, plasma panels are also "direct view". LCD can be "direct view" and front or rear projected just like CRTs.
CRTs have an advantage over other display technologies in the color department because the video color standard is largely based on the phosphors used in CRTs. LCDs are handicapped because the bulbs and LEDs do not output a full-spectrum white light to produce the exact red, green and blue wavelengths after filtering.
If you want a big image using CRTs, then consider front projectors. Used professional-grade projectors capable of 1080p are pennies on the (original cost) dollar. NEC projectors are often credited with having the best color and fleshtones, mostly due to the use of Delta HD-145 color-filtered lenses. So retro-fitting HD-145 lenses to other PJs (e.g. Electrohome Marquees) is a popular upgrade.
