I'd go with a used non-HDMI receiver

The mid and upper level models from Denon and Yamaha are usually very good, and because many people have 'upgraded' to an HDMI model the older ones can be found for cheap. The lower-end models that you mentioned were a cost-cutting attempt to compete with the Best Buy offers.
