Besides the tuner and associated electronics needed to get a valid signal to your TV/monitor, there's descrambling/handshake crap inside of a cable box. It's that extra crap that keeps you from using the box to tune to channels (scrambled or not) without the cable company's OK -- the box doesn't work without their blessing and the associated monthly lease. How hard/complicated is it to remove or bypass this crap so that a cable box can be used as a normal stand-alone tuner?
I am only looking for the answer to the specific question that was asked.
