I go from the Onkyo 709 L, R preamp out to my stereo preamp, an Audio Research LS-27. That preamp has a processor setting that passes the signal along at unity gain; the signal does go through the ARC electronics, though. The output of the ARC preamp goes directly to my ARC VS 115 amp and then to my L,R speakers, Vandersteen 5's. Gain is set by the Onkyo, whose own amps outputs to the center and L,R surround speakers. The Onkyo is set whatever way you want it, though I use it with no speacial effects, just direct. I found that DVD's contain all the special effects I need.
I'm suggesting that if you have a way of getting the Onkyo L,R preamp out into your stereo amp, then you wouldn't even need another amp. It's a question of whether your stereo preamp allows for this. You could always go into some high-level input and set the volume of that unit to some convenient place, using the Onkyo as your master volume.
I hope that's clearer!
