Like Jack said... I have owned quite a few BDPs and still have a few of them.
If the BD is a typical one with Java, then you can't stop it and return to where you left off. This is not a hardware issue.
Some newer BDs with Java do allow returning to where you left off, not sure if there's a way to know this beforehand. Not very common yet, but hope it becomes so. One example of this is Modern Family S2 BDs. There is another older method exemplified by the Lost BDs, where you can have it return to where you left off, but this is a very specific and somewhat limited and unusual method IME. Bottom line is it has to be specifically programmed on the disc, it is not a player function/hardware issue.
There is a second type of BD with Java that allows bookmarking. This is with the Green key. This ability is usually obvious because it will be somewhere on the main menu too. For example, just about all Universal and Lionsgate BDs have this. You still have to go through all the BD startup rigamarole though, before you can access the bookmark to resume. Again, not a hardware issue.
BDs without Java will behave like a DVD and will re-start where you left off with usually the exact same dialog as for a DVD.
It's all a bloody nuisance and was just one of the many reasons so many said BD wasn't ready for prime time. Besides all the player FW updates for new BDs, it was getting to be more painful to actually *use* the damn things compared to DVDs. We get used to it though, the ultimate result is definitely worth it...
