Now I'm enjoying dancing with The Devil

In one of our resident expert's Music in the Round columns, Kal made the following observation:

"HDMI is the invention of the Devil. I grant that the Devil is very smart—he has put on a single cable both hi-rez audio and video, and paid tribute to the gods of industry by incorporating obligatory content protection. "

Not only that, The Devil ensured incompatibility in areas that this salty old audiophile never expected. Previously, I was using a (mere) ten year old Samsung DLP 60" monitor that was designed for use with the DVI video connector. A few years back, I upgraded my receiver with some Emotiva separates and entered The Devil's world. I connected my cable box, BR player and eventually, a Roku via HDMI to the system. While everything worked, switching between sources was nothing like rotating the input knob on my audio preamplifier. There was always a series of screen flashing, unhappy messages, more screen flashing and usually I would get the desired result in the end. Other times, however, I would have to power cycle various components to get the chorus singing the same tune. Playing a disc sometimes took over five minutes to orchestrate.

Last year, I purchased a new Emotiva processor having read that it has improved the switching delay. What I found was that it simply didn't work with the ten year old DLP unit. The Devil has strict compatibility rules and my system lay outside the venue of working. Since the DLP was still working fine, I put the new processor on the shelf for a time in the future.

Which came today.

I purchased a 65" Samsung 240 hz model and now have it functional. Switching between sources is now instantaneous. All my sources now dance for The Devil - although I found that I had to use one specific HDMI cable for the BR player to make it work. The Roku was less picky and worked just fine with the one that yielded ZERO RESULTS with the BR player. Have you ever had an RCA or XLR cable that was that picky?

It would seem that many of my earlier issues had to do with using that horribly old (2004) monitor. Lesson? Plug and play works great when you buy new stuff. Forget anything that you've had for any space of time!
