Yes, but you don't have to spend a fortune. Most people find the $10 cable from Monoprice to suffice. Sparkles is the classic sign of bad HDMI cables.
Its a bigger issue for long runs.
My personal experience is that they make a difference, giving a somewhat better picture. I prefer Bettercables.com's Silver Serpents, but that's just me.
