DVD Enhanced Black Question?

207.182.233.35

i have a toshiba dvd player with the enhanced black feature which does enhance the deep black and produces much
richer colors. on my sony tv i have chosen the "movie" mode which produces finer detail in the picture but does tend to
make it somewhat softer. using both of these options seems to get the best quality picture but my question is why
are these options necessary? why wouldn't the hardware just come calibrated to produce the richest clearest picture.
it also complicates the use of calibration disks such as video essentials.
does anyone have the expertise to explain the proper use of these features or when and if they should be used?
