Dolby 5.1/DTS and Prologic

Hi, I just got into home theater a while ago when an old friend of mine gave me a TEAC AG-V8500 AV Reciever. I also have 5 speakers (Centre, Left and Right and Rear Left and Right). A old dvd player (with only 2 RCA outputs Left and Right). And really the question that I had is this. What is Dolby Prologic (as my reciever decodes it). And, should I have my Rear speakers plugged into the rear outpus on my reciever even though nothing ever comes out of them? Also what would be the best sounding way for my old dvd player. I want to make use of my rear speakers and really that takes some understanding of my reciever (which I go from a friend without a manual). Does anyone know of any Home Theater FAQ that would help me and/or help me with my reciever and Prologic etc... Thanks
