NTSC/PAL switchable VCRs?

I moved to this country from Europe a few years ago. Even then it was pretty standard for regular consumer VCRs in Europe to be switchable between PAL and NTSC systems. Here I have been completely unsuccesful in finding such a VCR. In fact, I haven't even been able to find a sales person who had a clue as to what I was talking about. I e-mailed all the major manufacturers, with no results. Where can I find a switchable VCR? Are they just not available here? If I got one from Europe and used it here with a 120V/240V step up transformer, would it work with an American TV? Would the AC frequency (50 Hz here, 60Hz in Europe) pose a problem?
