a couple of things to keep in mind....component video uses internally different decoders/encoders than Y/C or even composite video...they generally require that you change the setup when you change format (adjust your chroma, luma, setup) to optimize the picture...secondly, the DVD player is converting a digital signal to analog and encoding as YUV for your component output...there are significant differences in encoders, and the one in your DVD may just not be the best...finally, many people don't like component when they first see it because they've gotten used to cranking black with Y/C or CV, making higher contrast...personal preference may come into play, that you like over-black video opposed to true video response...a lot of people do!
