I thought the designation "Dolby Digital" didn't necessarily mean 5.1 or higher sound, I believe there is such a thing as Dolby stereo, etc. I think it's only a way to say that the sound was compressed via the Dolby Digital standard be it 7.1 surround or mono. My guess is the use the DVD player's analog outs for sound and go in the menu (if necessary) and turn on the analog out as opposed to PCM RAW or the likes.
