I'm not a fan of Meridian players or speakers but think the reputation for their processors is justified if linked to appropriate components. Not being in a position to audition heaps of DACs I took the plunge on an 861 and have not regretted the move. It is superb, top to bottom, on HT and music software. However the 861 seems astronomically priced in the US but I am told the 568 has similar sound properties at half the price. Also worth examining are some of the earlier Meridian processors which have received good posts on AA. Used units seem to sell at reasonable prices.
I empathise with your frustration and nearly gave up on digital altogether. Inexpensive processors, particularly older used ones, are a trap and many sound dreadful in a good system. Once good audio has been experienced on a music system it is difficult to accept less in HT. For this reason we have determined to establish a top combined music/HT system. Result is we are ready for 6 channel audio on SACD and/or DVD-A and await the release of appropriate players. The 861 already could handle DVD-A although it might be a long wait for an SACD card as it is the opposition for hi-rez digital.
Apologies for the ramble. Let us know what you finish up with please.
John
