I think A/V processors still have a market. The field may have thinned out some but there are options. Marantz, Onkyo/Integra, Rotel, NAD & even Emotiva all offer models that sort of bridge the gap between receivers and the super high end. Actually, some of the more affordable processors can be a better value due to the funds to keep up with latest features where the higher end tends to lag a bit behind if ever offering them. Sometimes it could come down to offer a feature of suffering a degrade in sound.
I don't think the cabling/hook up is an issue for separates, some with receivers that have preamp outs often add a better power amp. You know, we are willing to endure some obstacles for better sound :).
Picking up the processors used, as mentioned, can be an option. I'm still using a Marantz av8003 which is still operating perfectly. Luckily, 3D or any of the new carrots they dangle have tempted me to upgrade. It will be interesting to see how 4k goes when HD & Blu ray are still not in every home. There are still cable/satellite channels not in simple HD.
