There was also a W-VHS, which did an 'okay' job as an analog HD format -- worked similarly to Betacam in some limited ways. I don't thinkt that WVHS had any kind of real digital interface, but WVHS lived in the world where digital HD and analog HD co-existed (or even before digital HD at all.) Also, W-VHS supposedly did a better than credible job of NTSC -- from what I heard (indirectly) better than any consumer format at the time. (EDBeta might have been good, but was way too noisy and very poor color BW, AFAIR, WVHS had better color, but perhaps a little less-than EDBeta resolution.)
However, DVHS in HD mode was basically a digital data recorder, having no losses like the analog equivalent might have.
