RE: Running 5.1 through stereo speakers

The receiver needs to have a preamp out for this to work. If so, you have to have to disable the internal amps. My old 2270 has an RCA jumper to do this. New models usually have a setup option for an external amp.

Your 2 channel preamp also needs an HT setting with a fixed volume, so you can calibrate for 5.1. Mine does it by a certain input setup. You can also do it by putting the volume to a known setting.

It sounds like the output you're using is designed for a signal to a remote room or something. With a preamp output, your 2 channel system would always control the front speakers no matter what setting is on for the receiver.
