your observations on picture quality totally aligns with your instinct to change settings ... that is exactly where the problem is and ALL flat panel TV's can look that way ... the majority of folks get used to or prefer the super high contrast / technicolor vivid settings so anything less looks like a 'washed out' display to themwhereas, you apparently prefer a more natural presentation as do I
I think you'd be satisfied with either brand or even others if you were in the drivers seat as far as settings go ... if you're comfortable and careful going to a Best Buy etc., change the settings on the display models and see for yourself ... you'll be OK with any 'major' brand
