Glad to hear you are making headway. You have done some homework. All three of these models are low end overseas manufactured receivers and are all have their sound weaknesses. I agree with you that the Onkyo is a bit bright. Bright highend and big decisive bass are the positives with HT and are negatives with music. Warm midrange and smooth highs make for boring HT but nice music reproduction. Onkyo leans toward HT reproduction. You have to pay a lot more than you are willing to get a receiver that will do both well. I think you will have to pay around $100 more for the Yamaha and not have as good of HT processing chips over the Onkyo. As far as DSP modes, playing with those will last about 2 weeks and you will decide all but 2 or 3 are garbage just like everyone else. If the difference in sound is worth it go for Yamaha.
I would avoid Ubid for a receiver like the plague. It is O.K. for something like speakers that have a low failure rate. Way to much repaired B stock out there to trust Ubid on their receiver stock. Just go to pricescan.com and get the lowest price from an authorized online dealer. (Check Onkyo or Yamaha web site) Then call around town to local authorized dealers and this time of year someone will match it.As with all decisions that involve sound it becomes quite subjective. You know enough now to make your own decision. You just have to make the move.
