DVD player/TV contrast problem

209.240.221.86

I just purchased a Samsung DVD-611 for my teenage son for Christmas, but we both have noticed that when a rented disk is in a 4:3PS format, the contrast on his TV cycles and fluctuates (approx. every 10 seconds). We tried 16:9 format. No problem there; works like a charm. It does, however, become a problem when a disk comes preset in 4:3PS. He has his own surround set-up, although not high end equipment. Because of this, he runs the DVD through his A/V receiver, the video line from the receiver out to his VCR and from there to his TV (TV does not have direct a/v inputs). I definitely think this has "something" to do with it. I should note that we have tried this with another TV (again with no direct a/v inputs), with the same results. Is there anyone out there who might be able to diagnose our problem. Your feedback would be greatly welcomed.
