vcr's. we all need one, so which one should i get?

Before you tell me to get a dvd player, i've got one. i just need a simple hi-fi vcr to time shift record and to watch some rental tapes and tapes that I own. I just got digital cable so i'm looking to upgrade my aging vcr. I have a sony and have been fairly happy with it's performance, but not enough to say I'll only buy a sony again. Been thinking about panasonics or toshibas. any insights on best brands or which offer significant features for recording from digital cable.
any help would be appreciated.
