Hey Scott,Congrats on your smokin deal.
First, your salesman is sorta right. No, you can't hook up a progressive output to the component inputs on the Loewe. The component inputs only take 480i. However, you can hookup a 480p signal to the RGBHV (VGA) input. Few players output 480p through a VGA out, but I got a YUV to RGBHV transcoder. This will allow you to take the YUV (component output) to the transcoder and the transcoder to go to the VGA input on the Loewe. These transcoders can be found at www.keydigital.com and/or other sites for as little as $190 (try a search at www.avscience.com's forum. Believe me when I say it's worth it. The internal line doubler doesn't look nearly as good as the 480p coming out of most DVD players (despite what the salesman always say).
The most important thing you can do now to improve the picture is to turn NTSC standard to on. This sets the color, tint, brightness, etc. to NTSC standards and turns off scan velocity modulation. Also turn the temperature to medium. If you change brightness, or something the software will automatically turn off NTSC standard. The one gripe I have with the Planus is the klugey software.
For more advanced setup such as geometry, horizontal amplitude, etc. There are more internal adjustments in the service menu. Provided you feel comfortable tweaking these things. If you do, write down the default settings before you make any changes as you can screw things up if you're not careful.
