Actually, he could also get better sound if the DACs & analog output stage in the receiver are superior to what he has in his CD player. To answer this question, someone would have to know what CD player & receiver you have and have actually heard the combination.

I'd suggest that you try to find a retailer that will either let you borrow a cable for a day or take it back if you don't like it. Then you can try it yourself without any permanent investment.
