Hi Jim
Well, I have owned the Denon AVR-1601, although only for a short time before I upgraded to an Arcam AVR-100. My reason for doing so was NOT that I thought the Denon was an inferior product whatsoever, but rather, only because I have just sold my ultra hi-end 2 channel tube audio set-up ( approx. 15k ) and found that the Denon was just too much of a jump down from where I wanted to be long term. I needed a receiver that could do both reasonably well, and the Arcam was the only thing I heard that could do it both OK anyway. The Denon offered a lot of value for the money and I would say that after comparing it to the Yamaha RS V-396, the Denon came out on top musically, and had DTS to boot. You should be comparing the Denon to the similarly priced Yamaha RS V496 or newly out, 596.....As for the ones you are directly comparing, IMHO, the Denon was the clear winner....Hope this helps....
