Why can't I hear anything from my DVD player using a 5.1 conection?

I have a Sony DVD player model # DVP-650d, And I can't get to work. I recieved it as a hand me down gift. Every time I connect to to my reciever it doesn't work. I know that the problem isn't the reciever, if anyone has the answer please let me know. Thank you
