If this is purely for movie watching I'd definitely see if you can squeeze a WEGA out of your budget, maybe last year's model on a discount will get you around $700. The reason I'd recommend a WEGA is that for DVD, Sony has what's called v-compression (or anamorphic squeeze mode) which gives you 33% more resolution on anamorphic (or enhanced for widescreen) discs. This really makes a difference when viewing dvds.

If the WEGA is out of your budget, I'd go with a Toshiba. I've found toshiba tubes to be very nice color-wise and you get a lot of features for your $$$. The toshiba however does not do the squeeze mode unfortunately.
