It depends on the formatting of "widescreen"

Your widescreen TV is set up for the screen ratio of 16:9 but few LDs are issued in this format. "Widescreen" LDs vary from 2.35:1 to 1.85: 1 which means your 16:9 = 1.78:1 screen will not be completely filled so lines occur top & bottom. However you should be better off than with the older 4:3 = 1.33:1 style screen.
