Recently some friends & I did a comparision of the Sony 7700 & cd players. Bascially the Sony needs an external dac to have respectable audio quality. We used an old Audio Alchemy Dac in the box and it was a BIG step up. Really the Sony DVD player is about a $400 or less Cd player. One friend is using it with an MSB dac. While it is an improvement, a Cary CD player (tube output stage) blows it out of the water, even with the MSB.So if you want the best cd reproduction you need a high quality seperate cd player. Otherwise the Sony DVD player is budget cd player. Oh yes, the Sony is better than the Pioneer DVD player even though the Pioneer has 24bit outputs. The Sony has a better transport, which as Rodney has pointed out is important.
