You don't really need a loop, it just makes it easier via remote

There is no reason you need a processor loop.
Any stand alone 2 channel audio pre can be used.
In my set-up (with similar goals & priorities to yours) I use an Outlaw 1050 for HT, which sends the pre amp output to a Foreplay.
I also run a CDP direct to the Foreplay.

Not having a processor loop makes channel balancing a little more difficult, but not impossible.
I use 2 channel for HT mostly so it becomes irrelevant for me.
