Why not just use DIVX (compressed MPEG)

207.43.195.201

I personally have CD's full of MPEGs compressed to Divx 4.x. They are transferrable, easy to play back (just copy the codec to each cd in case the computer you're using doesn't have it). If you have a video capture/playback card, you're set. Just rip the source material and use software to compress to DIVX.
