Subscribe to a bunch of the home theater magazines and start there. I subscribe to just about everything audio/video related and just read, read, read.

There are also TONS of online places to get information, though like most things you'll have to do a lot of reading before it all starts to come together. I was in your boat before and confused as can be, but just kept reading all of the magazines I could get my hands on and after a while it started making sense. That's my best advice for you at this point.

You can also just post all of your questions here and home someone might answer them. I'll try to answer a few if I have the info.
