I'm not familiar with the 9900U but have seen the 9800U advertised in the Audio Advisor catalog for about $500, and it appears to be a very good machine. The time base corrector will not be of any help in defeating macrovision AFAIK; actually, I believe the older VCRs from the 80's have a better chance of getting around copy protection features. FWIW, the laserdisc format has no copy protection, and used LDs are relatively cheap nowadays because the format has been rendered essentially obsolete by DVD.Todd
