I would recomend you still to go with receiver(check out Pioneer Elite,btw).
You will be better with decent receiver and good speakers than with good separates and lesser speakers. And you can always upgrade to separates later.It will be easier to do than change speakers
If you are planning to use this system for 2-ch. music as well I would recomend to check KEF speakers.
I've been running KEF Reference 3's, C200 and Q50's with Pioneer Elite receiver and it sounded very good. Now I've upgraded to more expensive separates and they sound better than ever.
It's only one option, but generally I would start from speakers.
