Why is placing a lamp behind a FP reflective area (not the projector itself) a bad idea?

If you place a lamp behind your screen you will bias your visual system to perceive dark greys to be black. By adjusting this lighting you can gain higher perceived black values than without.

Or did I misunderstand you?

PS IMHO the above only applies if one calibrates the video chain properly and has an accurate enough dimmer/scale attached to the backlight for proper adjustments.
